Top Crossing Hut

Description:

Located at the third and "top"

crossing of the King River, this hut was built for the Crown Lands Department of

Victoria in c1957 by department employees and dog trappers, Frank and his son (`Snow') Burrows, along with `Nifty' Macdonald and Ken Bustle. In the absence of any established vehicle track, they used four pack horses to cart materials such as the corrugated iron for the roof. The hut was used to carry out their departmental duties. Close to the site was an old mining track (known as the Government Track) built by the Colonial Government in c1897 to aid mining access from the nearest railway to the Buckland Valley gold fields during the economic depression of the 1890s. The Wangaratta 4WD Club have been the caretakers of this hut for more than 20 years and work with Parks Victoria and VHCHA to keep it maintained for use by everyone. If you visit the hut and the area please respect the work these volunteers put in. Please note the tracks in to this hut are suitable for 4WD only, there are several crossings of King River which may be impassable after rain.
