Pikes Flat Hut

Description:

Unimpressive at first glance, the Pikes Flat Hut does however hold an interesting history that deserves to be recorded. It is located on Pikes Flat beside the Howqua River along 16 Mile Jeep Track, now part of the Alpine National Park. Also known as Murphy's Hut, it was built as a grazing hut in the 1970's by Terry Murphy. For expediency over beauty, Terry incorporated a prefabricated garden shed and other scavenged materials. The structure was determined to be in an unsafe condition and was demolished about 20 years ago, leaving only the tin shed. The well known High Country icon, Ian Stapleton reportedly once had thoughts of applying to build a genuine timber slab hut here, similar to Ritchies Hut, but was concerned the high amount of vehicular traffic that passes through here would have put any such building at risk. That project never went ahead. This large open flat beside the Howqua River is still a very popular destination and camping area for 4WDs, fly fishing and horseback trips.
