Description:
Moroka Hut is within the Alpine National Park. Also known as Gillio and Estoppey’s Hut. Renowned bushman Bill Gillio and Andy Estoppey built this hut in 1946 and were assisted by Eric Bateson and Arch Timbs. The materials for the hut were brought in by pack horse. Legendary mountain cattleman Andy Estoppey was still visiting the hut one year before his death in 1982 at the age of 84. He indicated great concern over the state of the hut and wished it to be restored. Bob and Stan Dunsmuir took over the leases through the 1990s.
Moroka hut was built where an earlier log hut had also been built around the 1900s. It also had log walls and a bark roof. Some of the old logs were used in the cattle fencing when the new hut was built.
The new roof is corrugated iron which covers the earlier malthoid fitted on the ceiling. The door was replaced in 1991. In 2012 the hut was refurbished by the VHCHA as it had sustained significant damage by vandals to the chimney/fireplace, structural support poles and the saddle/wood shed at the rear of hut by fire and we almost lost the hut forever. A successful grant application resulted in money being allocated to repair Moroka Hut and with the great organisational skills of our huts maintenance officer Norm Burrows and some very helpful volunteers, we had a successful working bee and Moroka hut was saved, thank you to the Victorian High Country Huts Association members and volunteers.
Moroka Hut is located about 200m off the Moroka Road in the Alpine National Park. Either park in the Moroka Hut car park and enjoy the short walk to the peaceful site on the banks of the Moroka river or take the 4wd only track around to the opposite side of the hut and enjoy the short walk in from the small campsite.
