Description:

At about 1115m above sea level, TOMAHAWK HUT (also known as Dales Hut) was built in 1927 by Arthur Dale, the first Mansfield Forestry Commission officer. Arthur’s Diary has the start and completion date, it took him 16 days to build just before the winter season hit. Arthur had a large wide area to patrol and built several huts at strategic places along his patrol lines (another of Arthur Dales Huts is Bindaree Hut on the Howqua River).

Although Tomahawk Hut has been rebuilt several times, the hut remains one of the oldest huts built for the Forestry Commission in the Alpine area.
Tomahawk hut is reported to have been rebuilt in 1963 by Eric Sale for the Forestry Commission, it was repaired by a Mansfield 4×4 club in 1991, then after the hut was badly damaged by a tree falling on it in 2004 it was repaired by DSE. In 2007 using Bushfire Recovery funds, DSE completed a full rebuild of the hut. Since then the Jackaroo 4WD Club has installed a picnic table.
